| Stellenbosch is closely connected to the history of the Springboks through the fact that one of South African rugby’s favourite sons was born here. Paul Roos was born in the town in 1878 and captained the first South African team to tour the British Isles in 1906. To prevent the clamouring British press from inventing their own name for the South African tourists, Paul Roos decided the team needed a South African name. This tour took place shortly after the Anglo–Boer War and Roos was afraid of the British press coming up with something malicious. So he met with the tour manager and decided on calling the team “De Springbokken”. The Daily Mail subsequently ran an article calling the visiting South Africans the “Springboks”. Hence the green blazer with gold trim and an embroidered Springbok on the left breast pocket, that has seen a few changes across the decades, but remains intrinsically the same. |
